too soon, mourning comes

there’s a certain irony about going to bed the night before a funeral.

morning/ mourning.
bed/ dead.

sleep.

sleep doesn’t come quickly enough on these nights.

your eyes remain open as if to make up for the too-early closing of the eyes of the dead one. your eyes remain open as if they too fear death upon closing. your eyes remain open. your eyes remain open.

and too soon, the morning comes.
